Los investigadores de <strong>INIA La Platina<\/strong>, Adolfo Donoso y Erika Salazar, analizaron <strong>veinticuatro tipos de tomate local<\/strong> para entender mejor c\u00f3mo rasgos asociados a los racimos de flores y cuaja de frutos, indicadores de rendimiento y las etapas de desarrollo, se comportan en condiciones adversas.<\/p>\n<p>Este estudio es fundamental en un contexto donde <strong>los rendimientos<\/strong> de las variedades modernas de tomate, al igual que en otras especies agr\u00edcolas, parecen haber alcanzado un l\u00edmite. En este sentido, el rol hist\u00f3rico de los centros de investigaci\u00f3n agr\u00edcola cobra importancia, al centrar sus esfuerzos en aumentar la producci\u00f3n nacional de alimentos para <strong>evitar incrementos importantes en su precio<\/strong>.\u00a0 Con este objetivo, Donoso y Salazar decidieron mirar hacia las variedades tradicionales de Chile guardadas en la Unidad de Recursos Gen\u00e9ticos y Banco de Germoplasma La Platina de INIA, un recurso gen\u00e9tico con una alta diversidad, subutilizado y parcialmente incluido en colecciones internacionales.<\/p>\n<h3>Grupos gen\u00e9ticos<\/h3>\n<p>A diferencia de la clasificaci\u00f3n habitual de las variedades locales de tomate, que se basa en la forma de los frutos o el territorio de origen y que no ha mostrado una relaci\u00f3n directa con su rendimiento agr\u00edcola, el estudio de Donoso y Salazar define <strong>grupos gen\u00e9ticos de tomate<\/strong> que comparten caracter\u00edsticas fisiogen\u00e9ticas espec\u00edficas. Estos rasgos son esenciales para la agricultura, ya que, tal como lo propuso el cient\u00edfico ruso Nikolai Vavilov, los <strong>centros primarios de diversidad gen\u00e9tica<\/strong> pueden ser cruciales para una <strong>adaptaci\u00f3n sostenible de la agricultura<\/strong> ante el cambio clim\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n<p>El estudio tambi\u00e9n permiti\u00f3 estimar la capacidad de las plantas para <strong>\u00abcompensar\u00bb entre el tama\u00f1o y la cantidad de frutos<\/strong>, es decir, ajustar su producci\u00f3n en funci\u00f3n de las condiciones ambientales.
